Service Description

Based at The Art Loft in Putney, London, this course helps students develop strong drawing foundations while exploring the distinctive visual language of anime and manga. Students progress from initial sketches to more complete illustrations, learning how to create expressive characters, dynamic poses, backgrounds and original scenes. The course is suitable for both beginners and students who already enjoy drawing anime and manga. What Students Learn Across the term, students explore: * anime and manga facial proportions * eyes, hairstyles and facial features * expressions and communicating emotion * head angles and different viewpoints * body proportions and anatomy fundamentals * poses, stance, gesture and movement * hands, feet, clothing and accessories * developing distinctive character features * creating consistent characters from different angles * backgrounds, environments and perspective * composition and placing characters within a scene * light, shadow and colour * visual storytelling and narrative illustration * creating original characters and developing a personal style Character Design & Expression Students learn how facial features, posture and body language can communicate personality and emotion. They are encouraged to move beyond simply copying existing characters and begin making their own creative decisions around appearance, expression, clothing and character identity. Backgrounds & Visual Storytelling Anime and manga drawing is not only about the character. Students also explore perspective, scale, depth, interiors, outdoor environments and composition so they can place characters within convincing settings and create more complete illustrations. A Full-Term Creative Journey Skills build progressively throughout the term rather than through unrelated weekly projects. Students revisit techniques, develop ideas and gradually combine character design, composition and storytelling into more considered work. Our Teaching Approach Techniques are demonstrated step by step, with plenty of room for individual interpretation. We focus on strong drawing skills, creative confidence and helping each student develop their own anime or manga-inspired style. Materials & Outcomes All materials are included. By the end of the term, students will have created a collection of drawings showing progress in character design, expression, poses, backgrounds, composition and original illustration.
